HISTORY OF BELLIN COLLEGE OF NURSING

  • 1909 – Deaconess Sanitarium Training School for Nurses founded by Mathilda Giese and a group of other nurses in cooperation with Bellin Hospital, which was founded in 1908
  • 1921 – Alumni Association organized
  • 1923 – Mrs. Charlotte Fowler of Antigo donates major gift for construction of nurses’ dormitory
  • 1928 - School renamed Bellin Memorial Training School
  • 1942 – School name changed to Bellin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing
  • 1953 – School closed temporarily
  • 1954 – Charlotte Fowler Hall nurses dormitory opens (30 years after Mrs. Fowler’s gift was donated)
  • 1955 – Bellin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing reopens
  • 1955 – School begins agreement with University of Wisconsin-Extension program
  • 1955 – Begins use of new bus, the “Blue Goose” to transport students to classes at UW-Extension
  • 1955 – Bellin Chorus becomes part of curriculum and all students required to enroll
  • 1956 – First scholarships given to six students, each receiving $1,000 from Fort Howard Paper Co.
  • 1958 – First male students enrolled. (It will be 12 years before the next male student enrolls)
  • 1962 – School renamed Bellin Hospital School of Nursing
  • 1967 – Bellin Hospital School of Nursing becomes first hospital school of nursing in Wisconsin to receive state approval for a changeover to a three-year academic plan
  • 1967 – School changes policy and allows students to marry during their nursing education program
  • 1968 – Nursing coursework program agreement signed with the new University of Wisconsin-Green Bay
  • 1983 – College receives approval for Bachelor of Science-Nursing (BSN) program in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay
  • 1984 – Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) program admits first students
  • 1985 – North Central Association (NCA) grants college candidacy status
  • 1986 – Last graduation from RN diploma program which began in 1909
  • 1988 – School renamed Bellin College of Nursing
  • 1988 – First BSN students receive diplomas
  • 1989 – NCA grants initial accreditation
  • 1994 – Bellin College of Nursing moves to 725 South Webster Avenue, Green Bay
  • 1994 – NCA grants 10-year re-accreditation
  • 1994 – Charlotte Fowler Hall is razed
  • 1997 – Accelerated transfer option (21-month) developed
  • 2001 – Sophomore transfer option developed
  • 2003 – BSN program accredited by the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) (initial five-year accreditation)
  • 2004 – New BCON logo in blue and teal colors adopted
  • 2004 – BSN program re-accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of NCA for 10 years
  • 2004 – HLC authorizes Master of Science-Nursing (MSN) degree program
  • 2006 – MSN program accredited by CCNE
  • 2007 – First MSN students receive diplomas
  • 2007 – Enters into BSN degree partnership agreement with St. Norbert College, De Pere
  • 2008 – 15-month BSN accelerated option offered
  • 2009 – College to celebrate its 100th anniversary
